Is Your Russian Medical Degree Valid in India? The 2026-27 NMC Compliance Checklist
The biggest question that can be posed by Indian students studying MBBS in Russia is: Will my degree be recognized in India? Yes–but then only when you are a good obedient follower of the new NMC regulations.
By April 2026, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has stringent rules to all students who seek medical education in a foreign country. As the NExT test age draws closer, the most important thing to do in your career is to make sure that your selected Russian medical university is 100 percent compliant.
This checklist will be your guide to a valid Indian medical license in case you are planning to study MBBS in Russia in the 2026-27 intake.
The 6-Point NMC Compliance Checklist (2026-27)
Your program should meet the following mandatory requirements as required under the FMGL Regulations 2021 so that your foreign medical degree is recognized by the NMC:
NEET-UG Qualification: To leave to Russia, you need to qualify in NEET-UG exam. Without this, no admission can be made.
Academic Duration of 54 Months: Your program should be a minimum of 54 months (4.5 years) of academic work.
12-Month Internship: You will have to do a 12-month rotating internship at the same foreign medical institution you attended your academic course.
English Only: Lectures, clinical training, and exams should be done in English only. “Bilingual” programs are not accepted.
License to Practice: You should be legally qualified to practice medicine in Russia, on a par with a local graduate.
Clinical Exposure: Practical clinical training in the 19 core subjects required by the NMC is compulsory. There is no online clinical training that is allowed.
Notable Revision: The “Compensation” Rule.
The NMC has just confirmed that students who went through online classes in a time of global disruptions will require a Compensation Certificate by the university. This certificate should outline the on-site physical clinical training that has been carried out to compensate such periods. Your degree can be denied at the registration process unless this authenticated evidence.
Why Russia is the Best Place to Indian students.
Although there will be increased supervision, the preferred choice of Indian students in 2026 is to do MBBS in Russia due to the following reasons:
Infrastructure: The best government universities are fully geared towards modern medical practice and are in line with NExT curriculum.
Uniformity: The typical 6-year (5 academic years + 1-year internship) program in most Russian governmental medical universities is a natural fulfillment of the 54+12 month minimum.
Support: Indian students have become the subject of special assistance by leading universities, such as on-campus Indian mess, and NExT exam preparation resources.
How to Check Your University.
Don’t rely on hearsay. Check up your university in the following ways before parting with any admission fees:
Check the WDOMS: Find your university in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
Check NMC Notices: NMC regularly updates their advisories, which can be found on the official site.
Verify English Medium: Be sure that you are issued with an official admission letter which says English Medium throughout the course.
